2022 Chief Justice's Distinguished Service Award Recipient
Chief Judge Bonnie J. Helms
KEY WEST, FL— The 16th Judicial Circuit is pleased to announce that Chief Judge Bonnie J. Helms is the recipient of the 2022 Chief Justice’s Distinguished Judicial Service Award. This award is presented annually to one judge in the State of Florida to honor and recognize outstanding service as it relates to the support of pro bono legal services. The award will be presented by Chief Justice Charles Canady at a ceremony at the Supreme Court of Florida in Tallahassee on January 20, 2022.
Judge Helms was elected to the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court bench in 2014 and ran without opposition in 2020. She currently sits in the Family and Civil Divisions in Key West and beginning January 1, 2022, she will be assigned to the Family Division in Marathon. She was recently elected by her colleagues as Chief Judge for a two-year term which began July 1, 2021. Judge Helms is also the current chair of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit’s Pro Bono Committee, which educates local attorneys on the need to provide pro bono services and promotes to the public the benefits of pro bono services that local attorneys and Legal Services of the Florida Keys provide through clinics and individual representation.
The Distinguished Judicial Service award is presented at the annual Pro Bono Award Ceremony in Tallahassee, in which the Florida Supreme Court and the Florida Bar also honor and recognize individual, circuit, Voluntary Bar, Law Firm, Young Lawyers Division and Distinguished Federal Judicial Service recipients for their efforts in ensuring access to justice for those who could otherwise not afford it.

2024 Employee of the Quarter (July - September) - Maria Maynard
Congratulations to Maria Maynard, Court Interpreter (Certified), for being selected as the Employee of the Quarter for July - September 2024. Since joining the 16th Judicial Circuit in July 2004, Maria has consistently demonstrated her exceptional skills and unwavering dedication to both the Court Administration team and the judiciary. Her commitment and passion for her work serve as an inspiration to us all. Over the past two decades, she has proven herself to be an invaluable asset whose work significantly enhances the operations of the court.
As a Court Interpreter, Maria plays a vital role as a linguistic bridge, ensuring clear, accurate, and meaningful communication for Spanish-speaking parties involved in court proceedings. Whether handling misdemeanors, felonies, domestic violence cases, mental health hearings, or juvenile matters, Maria's interpreting goes beyond a simple word-for-word translation. She expertly conveys the subtleties and intentions behind the spoken words, ensuring all parties-including the court-understand each other fully and without ambiguity.
Maria's meticulous approach is evident in her commitment to continual research between hearings. Whether consulting specialized dictionaries, exploring online forums, or reviewing legal-specific publications, she goes the extra mile to ensure the precise translation of complex legal terminology and jargon. Her dedication to confidentiality and impartiality is unwavering, and her ethical standards are exemplary.
Her mastery of consecutive interpretation truly stands out among Maria's many strengths. She consistently delivers renditions that preserve the statements' original meaning, tone, and context, enabling seamless communication during even the most challenging court sessions.
In addition to her primary responsibilities, Maria is always willing to assist with various tasks for Court Administration, including answering phones, handling warrants, and mail runs -further demonstrating her commitment to teamwork.
Maria's dedication, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of excellence make her an indispensable member of the 16th Judicial Circuit. We are immensely grateful for her contributions and congratulate her on this well earned recognition as Employee of the Quarter.

2023-2024 Employee of the Year (July 2023-June 2024) - Isis Majeska
As announced at the 2024 Employee Recognition Ceremony on Friday, Isis Majeska, Supervising Court Interpreter (Certified), was chosen by Chief Judge Bonnie Helms as the Employee of the Year for July 2023 to June 2024.
Isis's role as the supervising interpreter is multifaceted. She not only manages the operations of the Court Interpreter unit and assists with interpreting and translating assignments, but she also plays a crucial role in ADA accommodations, courthouse safety, urinalysis drug testing, quarterly jury trial reports, and preparing the six-month calendars for the Marathon and Plantation Key judges. Her unique contributions have significantly enhanced our operations.
Isis's dedication to the Circuit and our community is not just a matter of fulfilling her job description. She has rescheduled her vacations to assist the court and proactively communicated with staff when she is away. Her introduction of the practice of staff interpreters attending weekend first appearances, rather than using outside contracted interpreters, has not only saved costs but also improved the efficiency of our operations.
Our 16th Judicial Circuit mission statement reads in part: "Each individual employee in our Circuit is here to see that justice is served." And Isis, due to her tireless efforts and the many hats she wears for the Circuit, makes certain that justice is served on a daily basis. Isis is not required by her job description to assist in many of these extra duties; she does it by choice. Isis understands that the success of a team is dependent on the success of every individual who works for the circuit.
Isis's dedication, professionalism, and willingness to go above and beyond make her an invaluable member of our team.
As the recipient of this yearly award, Isis received a certificate, a plaque, and one 8-hour day of administrative leave, as well as recognition on our website and in the local paper.

2024 Employee of the Quarter (April-June) - Laura Goodman
Congratulations to Laura Goodman, Court Program Specialist II, for being selected as the Employee of the Quarter for April-June 2024. Since Laura's employment with the 16th Circuit in October 2019, she has proven herself to be a unique and invaluable asset to the Case Management team and the 16th Judicial Circuit. Her role as a Court Program Specialist, managing and assisting judges and magistrates in administering and timely disposing of cases in the probate, civil, guardianship, and mental health divisions, is truly exceptional.
Laura is polite, courteous, and always willing and able to help without complaint when needed. She takes pride in her work and always ensures she has done everything properly. She has also taken on such an essential role for the circuit since she took over all the Key West and Marathon mental health caseloads. She has a constantly demanding role in taking care of all the involuntary placements.
Laura's willingness to step in and support her co-workers when they need it or are out of the office for an extended period is truly commendable. Her team spirit and dedication to the smooth functioning of our operations are greatly appreciated.
Laura's unwavering dedication and reliability are truly commendable. In her 4 ½ years of service with the 16th Judicial Circuit, she has not taken a single vacation, which is a testament to her commitment. Her consistent presence and dependable work ethic have undoubtedly contributed to the smooth functioning of our operations, instilling a sense of security and confidence in her abilities.

2023 Employee of the Quarter (October-December) - Sanat Baratov
Congratulations to Sanat Baratov, Pretrial Services Officer, for being selected as the Employee of the Quarter for October-December 2023. Sanat's employment with the 16th Judicial Circuit began in March 2020 as a Laboratory Technician. In September 2021 he was promoted to his current position as a Pretrial Services Officer. In his role as a Pretrial Services Officer, he provides the judges with critical information so they can make informed decisions about release conditions for all persons arrested within our county.
Sanat is a valued and dependable employee who consistently demonstrates unwavering commitment to his tasks and responsibilities. He possesses a strong work ethic and reliability in meeting daily first appearance deadlines. Weekend days for Sanat usually begin at 4 a.m. by assisting his co-workers in gathering information about the arrestees in a timely and efficient manner for first appearances. Also, as part of his duties, he informs the weekend interpreter when there are individuals requiring their services. What many might not know is Sanat speaks five languages (Persian, Russian, Korean, Uzbeki, and English); and when unable to find a foreign language interpreter on the weekends, Sanat has stepped in with consent to interpret for individuals when needed, which is beyond the scope of his job duties.
His nomination acknowledges his ability, not only to complete his work with distinction, but to proactively seek opportunities to contribute and improve, making him an indispensable asset to the circuit. Thank you, Sanat, the 16th Judicial Circuit is very lucky to have you as a member of our team!
